When we first started meditating, it is was not long before the conscious mind asked, “I wonder if I am in Alpha?” Some people have bought biofeedback machines, just so that they would know. The problem that we saw with this approach is that the biofeedback machine can become an end in itself. When this happens, a person concentrates more on the measurement, than on achieving results. So how can we identify when we have reached a particular level without a biofeedback machine? Here are some characteristic results that can help:

Alpha - at this level, we can become aware of the inner senses. There are five or more inner senses that correspond to the outer senses, the inner sense of sight, hearing, feeling, smelling, and tasting. By becoming aware of the inner senses, we can obtain information from sources beyond the physical such as the subconscious, the superconscious, and other dimensions.

Theta - at this level, we can become aware of our inner source of joy, peace, and/or spiritual connection. By getting in touch with our inner source, we can be less affected by what is going on in the physical.

Delta - at this level, we can become more aware that everything is light and intention.

Gamma - at this level, we can lose awareness of self and thus of separation.

These are offered from our own experience and as such, may be incomplete.

The authors have found that it is more important to benefit from meditation, than to reach particular levels. For example, if we are receiving benefits, does it matter if we are not in Alpha? If we are not receiving benefits, does it matter if we are in Alpha? For this reason, we have included the section on the benefits of meditation.
