Many years ago, Gale attended a talk by Joe Dominguez entitled, Your Money or Your Life (he co-authored a book by the same title). Joe said that if we do not recognize what something is, we try to use it in the wrong way. As an example, he held up a pencil and said, "What would happen if I confused this with this microphone?" He then moved away from the microphone and tried taking in to the pencil. He then took the microphone and tried using it to mark a piece of paper. His point was, no matter how hard he tried, the pencil would not amplify his voice and the microphone would not write. Joe used this example for talking about how we confuse money with other things. However the vision of Joe trying to talk in to the pencil has stayed with Gale for decades because it seemed so obvious. However, unconscious confusion like this can be a powerful force in our lives. Note that this does not involve opposites. Opposites involve finding balance. This involves confusion between related things. Here are some examples:
